Living in Oxford
Oxford is one of the most beautiful cities in the United Kingdom. The city is located approximately 60 miles from the capital, London and is one of the most architectural cities in the world. The city is surrounded by two rivers that is, river Cherwell and Thames. The city of Oxford was founded somewhere around the 10th century but its population started growing significantly in the 11th century. The abrupt growth in population occurred when the king of France, Henry II banned all students of English origin from attending the University of Paris.
This necessitated the formation of the Oxford University currently the oldest university in the United Kingdom. As of 2008, the population of Oxford was approximately 160,000 people most of whom are students. However, the very many people commute to the city daily for work. Actually, a recent survey was conducted and revealed that the population of the city during the day is almost 200,000 due to the number of people who work within the city but live in other places. People enter the city through the M40. At some point, this entrance was affected by frequent traffic snare ups due to the number of people entering the town but the problem was alleviated by the Park and Ride services. The city is well connected to major cities in the United Kingdom via a rail system.
Oxford is home to some of the most beautiful and elegant residential houses. These houses have very appealing architectural designs. Most residential houses were built in the surrounding of the University but currently there exist very elegant rental houses outside the main town. These areas include Headington, Elsfield, Marston and Cowley Road. The social atmosphere in the city is average although there are very many cafes and fast foods to cater for the student family. In general, this is a very rich cultural city that serves as an excellent place to live especially for the youth and middle aged.
